The following policies govern how we use our library.
Returns may be made to the circulation desk of either library or placed in book drops outside either library after regular hours. Items returned before the opening of the library will be credited as returned the last day the library was open. Because of a reciprocal agreement, returns may also be made to Sweet Briar College and Randolph College (during the regular academic year from September to May).
There is no limit on the number of library materials that may be checked out by a patron, with the exception of DVDs and materials in heavy demand.
The use of the Library may be denied for due cause. Such cause may be failure to return books or materials or failure to pay penalties, destruction of books or other library property, disturbance of patrons or any other objectionable conduct on library premises. (Amherst County Code, Section 6-9c.)
Patrons are blocked from further circulation when they owe $5.00 or more in any type of fines or fees. Blocking of library privileges affects all members of the household.
State Set-Off Debt
The library system may send the record of patrons who owe $25.00 or more in library charges and/or have been issued a third overdue notice to the Virginia State Tax Set-Off Debt program. Payment due the library system is then withheld from the patron’s state tax refund or lottery winnings.
Use of Library Grounds Policy
The property and grounds surrounding the two Amherst County Public Library buildings may be used only for and by the library, the Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library Groups, and local government for appropriate activities. Use of library grounds is not permitted by other groups unless they are partnering with the library or one of the groups approved to use library grounds.
Individual library users and citizens may use the grounds as they would a local park for reading, picnics, or other activities, but the grounds are not available for organized activities by formal or informal groups of people.
