Section 1-2 Selection of Library Materials
The Board of Trustees delegates responsibility for selection
of the library’s collection to the Library Director.
Staff members choose items for the collection based on the
wide range of community tastes and interests. Therefore,
items in the collection will not necessarily appeal to all
community tastes and interests.
Materials chosen for the youth services section are selected
to appeal to children of different ages and interests. Therefore,
not everything in the youth services section will be appropriate
for all children.
Library staff members will help parents and children locate
materials, but they cannot presume to make decisions for
parents as to which library materials are appropriate for
their children. Since the Library cannot anticipate or guess
a family’s persuasion on potentially controversial
issues, the Library encourages parents to have an active
and responsible interest in their child’s selection
of materials.
If you have an objection to any library material(s), please
complete a Request for Reconsideration of Library Resources
form (see Appendix), outlining your concerns as concisely
as possible. A committee of library staff responsible for
collection development will review the request and make a
recommendation to the Library Director. The Library Director
will contact you with a decision as soon as this process
is completed. Appeals of this decision must be made in writing
to the Board of Trustees.
