Your Library Card
Any resident of Amherst County may apply for a free library card. To apply for a library card, a photo identification must be shown. A parent or guardian must sign the application for minors (under age 18). People working for educational facilities in Amherst County may also obtain cards free of charge.
Non-Amherst County residents may apply for a card for an equivalent fee charged Amherst residents by their locality. A 120 day card is also available for $7.00. Temporary Amherst County residents may apply for a card if proof of temporary residence is provided along with verification of permanent residency. Lynchburg residents may apply for a card without paying the non-resident fee due to a reciprocal agreement between the Amherst County Public Library and the Lynchburg Public Library. Temporary county residents and non residents wishing only to use the public access computers may request an annual limited access card.
Books, sound recordings, and magazines may be checked out for three weeks. New books check out for two weeks. Videos/DVDs may be checked out for one week.
All library materials except DVDs may be renewed up to two times in person, by telephone, or on the library’s website unless a hold has been placed on the item. No more than five DVDs may be checked out at a time. Limits may be temporarily placed on other items when demand is high.
Library users are responsible for all items checked out on their cards. The card must be presented to check out materials. Replacement cards are free for the first replacement. Second and subsequent replacements cost $5.00.
Extended Use (Overdue) Fees
An extended use fee of 10 cents per day per item is charged for all items except DVDs and Interlibrary Loans. DVD fees are $1.00 per day. Fines on Interlibrary Loan materials are 50 cents per day.
In order for all patrons to have ready access to library materials, accounts will be blocked at $5.00 of fees or charges. The library makes use of all legal means available to recover lost materials and fees.
